Hiring the wrong salesperson can be catastrophic for any size business. For the most part sales assessments are mostly behaviorally based unless there are specific industry skills (IT, terminology, etc) necessary to be a good salesperson at the organization. There are a lot of different thoughts on the best way to hire salespeople. Many times it matters exactly how many sales people you are hiring per year.
